Bibliotheca Alexandrina: Intel-BASEF Scientist Chosen Among Google Science Fair 2012 Regional Finalists

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) proudly announced the selection of Omar Obeya, an Intel-BASEF young scientist, as regional finalist in Google Science Fair 2012. Obeya, a grade-11 student at Victoria College, Alexandria, had participated in Intel-BASEF 2012 in the “Computer Sciences” category; his project “Improving Search in Sorted Arrays” won the “Best in Category” award, as well as a special award Certificate of “Intel Excellence” in Computer Science. Obeya’s project aims at improving computerized life through introducing a memory and time saving searching method.

Intel-BASEF brings together students in grades 9–12; 14 18 years of age; from Alexandria and neighboring governorates to train, research, innovate, compete, and win. Google Science Fair is an online science competition seeking curious minds from the four corners of the globe ranging from 13 to 18 years of age. This year, the fair received thousands of entries from more than 100 countries, and narrowed them down to 90 regional finalists who represent innovative and groundbreaking science.

On 6 June 2012, Google Science Fair announced the final 15 finalists, and the winner of the Scientific American Science in Action prize. On 23 July 2012, the 15 finalists were flown out to Google’s Headquarters in California for the celebrity finalist event and the last round judging, which was conducted by Google’s panel of renowned scientists and innovators.
