It is our pleasure to inform you that Journal of Science Communication (JCOM), in collaboration with the international research institutes of Trieste, are organizing four short international training courses, JCOM Masterclasses, in different areas of the science communication field that you might be interested in attending. On March 4, 2013 a criminal fire destroyed the Science Centre of Città della Scienza in Naples. On the occasion of the first anniversary next Tuesday, a Framework Program Agreement that will kick off the rebuilding will be signed between the Italian Government, Regione Campania, the City of Naples and Città della Scienza.

The Science Centre World Summit, which will take place in Mechelen/Brussels (Belgium) from Monday 17 till Wednesday 19 March 2014, is a high-level, global meeting point for representatives from different fields to discuss topics concerning all parties. The Summit gives you the insight and the tools to prepare your science centre for a rapidly changing society. The innovative format of the Summit allows for the establishment of new strategic partnerships that enhance large-scale citizen engagement in science and technology.

This week, world leaders gathered for a momentous occasion — the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro. Will it be a success? In my opinion, yes. To be sure, the negotiations have been lengthy. Even now there is more disagreement than agreement on the details of the so-called “outcome document” that will emerge. Yet that will not be the defining measure. Far more important is what the Rio conference has already accomplished. And that is to build a global movement for change.
