This session brings together presenters who have initiated maker spaces in very different contexts, sharing honest stories from the field. Be it stories in science centers, independent spaces, or community-based organizations. Through a series of short case narratives, we reveal how “place” is never neutral: community histories, expectations, constraints, and local assets profoundly shape how a maker space begins, what it becomes, and who it feels it belongs to. Each presenter will unpack cases they were directly involved in, highlighting key decisions, partnerships, and practical steps - alongside the challenges that tested the team’s assumptions. We will share the contrast between earlier thoughts (on audiences, activities, tools, and outcomes) and emerging realities on the community needs, shifting roles, hidden barriers, and surprising sources of support. Particular attention is given to how collaboration - with local educators, youth groups, artisans, municipalities, or NGOs - strengthened trust and sustainability. Participants will leave with transferable insights on reading context, engaging communities as co-designers, and adapting maker space models with humility, creativity, and care.
