Ciência Viva: weaving science networks for 30 years

Developing a national strategy for scientific & technological culture: weaving science networks for 30 years.

Ciência Viva, the Portuguese agency for scientific and technological culture was created in 1996 with a clearly defined purpose in mind: supporting basic scientific education, with experimental science teaching, and promoting scientific culture in Portuguese society.

Nowadays, in a period in which science and knowledge dictate more than ever before the paths that society takes in all directions, from health to the economy, from education to scientific research, from the arts to the humanities, everything points to forms of cooperation that enable barriers to be overcome. And this cooperation is increasingly taking place in an international context, through partnerships that Ciência Viva has been building and which allow it to share ideas, products and good practices.

In this session we will present and discuss:

  1. How we build the most influential nationwide scientific culture programs of the past three decades, which have significantly contributed to community development.
  1. How we promoted and share best practices in science education and communication in collaboration with partners across the country. The qualifications and skills in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts Mathematics) have been directly linked to higher levels of productivity and innovation, enabling better development.
  1. Envision the future by reimagining approaches to science engagement. Ciência Viva has been establishing partnerships with universities, research units and companies in the digital sector to promote the digital skills of primary and secondary school students. Over the next decade, we will see a significant digital transition for which schools will need to be prepared.
