Public engagement is the lifeblood of any science center, and today’s tools—from social media to large-scale fundraising campaigns—offer unprecedented reach. However, the same visibility that drives our success also leaves us vulnerable. The line between a viral success and a public relations crisis is often thinner than we realize.
This Confession Session moves beyond polished success stories to explore real-world instances where marketing strategies, fundraising appeals, and communication efforts that didn’t go as planned. Instead of showcasing "best practices", we focus on honest mistakes, misjudgments in messaging, and unexpected public reactions.
Participants are welcome to share relevant cases, including but not limited to:
-
Communications & Social Media: How intent can be lost in translation and lead to unexpected backlash.
-
Fundraising & Partnerships: The risks of misaligned messaging or "tone-deaf" appeals in sensitive climates.
-
Marketing & Branding: What happens when a campaign's creative direction misses the mark with the local community.
We aim to collectively gain insight into managing fallout, clarifying intent, and work to repair institutional trust. This session is an invitation to learn from the "un-success stories" that ultimately shape more resilient and culturally sensitive outreach strategies.
