AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a trendy, rapidly changing technology and a hot topic for many science and technology museums. At the Exploratorium, the exhibition team took on the challenge of developing an AI exhibition using a phenomenon-based approach—core to Exploratorium pedagogy—and focused on showcasing facets of AI that wouldn’t be outdated in a year. This exhibition culminated at the Exploratorium in summer 2025 with Adventures in AI, which explores how human intelligence is like and unlike machine intelligence, how AI tools are being applied in society, and invites visitors to reflect on AI’s ethical and environmental impacts. Paired with programming, this exhibition aimed to make the topic of AI fun and educational for all ages and to spark conversations long after visitors have left. This session will reveal lessons learned by the Exploratorium team, including both successes and challenges in the development and evaluation of the exhibition.
