Bibliotheca Alexandrina: 10 Years of Science Communication: Ramadan Crescent

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) orgazined the “Ramadan Crescent” event on 19 July 2012, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Small Theatre and Plaza at 6:00 pm. The event started with a lecture by PSC Astronomer, Dr. Omar Fikry, accompanied by live observation by Mr. Aymen Ibrahem, PSC Senior Astronomy Specialist, to introduce the audience to the marvels of the skies

Eratosthenes festivity is an annual event organized by the History of Science Museum on the 21st of June every year since 2003; the day of Summer Solstice in Alexandria and Aswan. Eratosthenes, the Greek scientist and the third librarian of the Ancient Library of Alexandria, was the first scientist who measure the circumference of the Erath before 2000 years ago in these two cities.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina: The PSC celebrates the Venus Transit

On Wednesday, 6 June 2012, the world celebrated a rare phenomenon known as the Venus transit. During this transit, Venus is seen as a black dot moving slowly across the Sun’s disk. Venus transits occur in pairs of events separated by about eight years, and these pairs recur every 105.5 or 121.5 years. The reason for the rarity of Venus transits is that the plane of Venus’ orbit is tilted at a small angle to Earth’s orbital plane.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina: Intel-BASEF Scientist Chosen Among Google Science Fair 2012 Regional Finalists

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) proudly announced the selection of Omar Obeya, an Intel-BASEF young scientist, as regional finalist in Google Science Fair 2012. Obeya, a grade-11 student at Victoria College, Alexandria, had participated in Intel-BASEF 2012 in the “Computer Sciences” category; his project “Improving Search in Sorted Arrays” won the “Best in Category” award, as well as a special award Certificate of “Intel Excellence” in Computer Science. Obeya’s project aims at improving computerized life through introducing a memory and time saving searching method.

The PSC invited children and youth, 4 – 16 years of age, to join the Center's Summer Program. The Program included a variety of activities such as: practical experiments, scientific contests, lectures, Planetarium and Auditorium shows.

The Spring Festival at Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Science and Technology Center

Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Science and Technology Center, in cooperation with several local institutions, celebrated the Spring Festival during the mid-year vacation, 19-26 March 2012. The festival included an entertaining educational program for the visitors. As well as the awarness exhibitions as "I Love the Nature", and "The Teeth" which was organized in cooperation with Eldamam University. It is worth mentioning that the number of visitors during the festival was about 13200 visitors.
