THE ‘lema?’ SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMME TO INSPIRE UAE YOUTH AT ‘LIVE SCIENCE’ EVENT

• ‘lema?’  will help educate visitors to the show through three informative workshops
• Already engaging pupils across Abu Dhabi’s schools, the initiative sparks curiosity through informal, educational science experiences
• ‘lema?’ is designed to complement the existing curriculum for grades 3-7

Abu Dhabi, 13 February 2016: ‘lema?’, the world-class informal science initiative from the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee (TDC), is participating in the interactive science event ‘Live Science’, which takes place at Mushrif Park in Abu Dhabi from January 31st to March 5th. A joint initiative from Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala), Live Science provides a platform for the UAE’s youth to learn about aerospace, science and technology innovations through interactive and educational activations.

‘lema?’ is sponsored by Mubadala, who together with TDC, aim to inspire young students in STEM education, which will shape a future workforce that will drive the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and the UAE Innovation Strategy.

“By engaging the UAE’s youth from a young age, ‘lema?’ inspires them to pursue careers in science and technology-based industries, supporting the strategies of the Abu Dhabi and UAE government for an innovative, knowledge-based society,” said Hanaa Al Mousawi, Manager, Science and Technology Promotion at TDC. “‘lema?’ has already been recognized for its success in generating excitement in these vital subjects and we are delighted to share the initiative with even more children at Live Science.”

Homaid Al Shemmari, CEO of Aerospace & Engineering Services at Mubadala, said: “We are proud to work with TDC to offer the training and educational opportunities needed for today’s youth to excel and to support the development of an aerospace hub for Abu Dhabi.  We are passionate supporters of STEM education initiatives and are proud to bring this interactive and educational experience to students at the Live Science event this year.”

The ‘lema?’ programme creates exciting scientific experiences and memories for students inside the classroom, and follows global best practice to engage pupils across Abu Dhabi. Designed to complement the existing ADEC science curriculum for grades 3-7, ‘lema?’ has already reached more than 65,000 students across 290 private and public schools in the Emirate.

The initiative runs throughout the school year and includes four main workshops, three of which will feature at Live Science:

Lego Mindstorm:

A hands-on, interactive workshop that allows participants to program their own robots, Lego Mindstorm explores what a robot is and why they are useful, as well as what the term “programming” means and how robots work. Following an introduction to the specialist programming software, students work in small groups to program their group’s robot. They use their new programming knowledge and problem-solving skills to make their robot complete a number of challenges, each more complicated than the last.

From this workshop, children will gain an understanding of computer programming and describe some of its applications in real life. They will also be able to identify problems within a program and create solutions. In addition, they will be able to explain how various sensors on a robot can be used to control its movement and identify the benefits each sensor provides.

Radio Studio:

This fascinating workshop takes participants behind the microphone to record and transmit their very own radio broadcast into space, discovering the incredible applied science that enables this technology along the way. First, they’ll be introduced to the science of sound and how sound waves are converted into electrical signals; then they will record and process their own voices, ready to be sent as a radio broadcast to far off galaxies.
Participants will get to investigate the effect of changing pitch and speed on sounds and recognize that radio waves can travel long distances. In addition, they will witness that sound can be used to move solid objects and identify the main components of a radio receiver.

Secrets of Space - Digital Planetarium Show:

This mesmerizing show features an inflatable spherical planetarium fitted with a digital projection system that throws images of stars, planets and other phenomena on to the inside surface of the planetarium. Secrets of Space explains the Solar System; its structure and movements of planets within it, as well as what is beyond the Solar System, the Milky Way and other galaxies - the number of other stars and galaxies in the universe demonstrating its sheer size.

‘lema?’ workshops are designed in conjunction with the Edinburgh International Science festival (EISF) and ADEC to ensure key learning objectives are met and supported in a fun and memorable way. All workshops are delivered by Science Communicators who are trained to deliver impactful science and technology based workshops that engage students.
