The Intersection of Science, Communication, and Policy-Making | Thursday, 28 September 2023, 3-4 pm Cairo Time

Watch the Webinar Recording

Science communication is the process of communicating scientific information to the public, and engendering public engagement in scientific advancement, for sustainable development. Policy development and policy-making are the processes by which governments create and implement laws and regulations. They are essential for ensuring that society functions effectively and that the rights and interests of all citizens are protected. Science can play a vital role in informing and shaping public policy. For example, scientific evidence can be used to identify problems, develop solutions, and evaluate the effectiveness of policies. Increasingly, there is also the recognition that science communication itself, particularly in the Global South regions of the world, needs the enabling environment of enhanced policy-making, implementation and resourcing, in order to deliver inclusive impact in these regions.

This webinar will explore the role of science communication in policy development and policy-making as well as elaborate on mechanisms for up-scaling inclusive science communication policy-making and implementation. We will hear from experts about the challenges they face, including:

  • The importance of science communication in informing public policy;
  • The challenges of communicating science to policymakers and building trust between scientists and policymakers;
  • Opportunities and mechanisms for up-scaling science communication policy-making and implementation in the Global South, in order to deliver inclusive and impactful public engagement

This webinar is the first collaboration between NAMES network and African GONG–the Pan-African Network for the Popularization of Science & Technology and Science Communication. It will be of interest to anyone who is involved in the intersection of science, communication, and policy. It will provide you with the knowledge and tools you need to communicate science effectively to policymakers and to advocate for inclusive science-based policies.
