In "My SciComm Hero" series, we interview prominent local, regional, and international figures in the field of science communiction, to learn about their experiences and benefit from their expertise in this relevantly new field in the North Africa and Middle East region.
In the first of these interviews, Maissa Azab, NAMES Executive Director, in collaboration with Ayman Elsayed, Senior Manager of Learning and Outreach Programs, Grand Egyptian Museum, and Former Director of the Planetarium Science Center, together interviewed Hoda Elmikaty, Bibliotheca Alexandrina General Coordinator and Former Director of the Planetarium Science Center, on Wednesday, 7 December 2022, 12 pm GMT+2
Hoda Elmikaty is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) General Coordinator as of June 2020. Prior to that, she held the post of the BA Deputy Director for a four-year-term starting May 2016. She was responsible for all the administrative works of the Library, overseeing the smooth operation of projects undertaken by the various sectors of the Library and monitoring and evaluating performance of the different departments at the BA.
In 2000, Hoda Elmikaty assumed the management of the BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC) where she introduced the first hands-on informal science education facility in Egypt. She was the initiating founding member of the North Africa and Middle East Science centers network (NAMES) and its first president from 2006 to 2010. She took charge of the BA Cultural Outreach Sector in 2013. Through this post, she managed the BA outreach activities in arts, science communication and heritage, supervising the different departments under the sector.
