Call for Applications: The 2026 Mijbil Almutawa Award


We are proud to announce the opening of the Mijbil Almutawa Award Program (MAAP) for 2026. This annual award honors the enduring legacy of the late Mijbil Almutawa, a visionary leader who was instrumental in the growth of the science center field in the North Africa and Middle East region.

In keeping with Mr. Almutawa’s lifelong commitment to supporting youth, this award is designed to empower the next generation of science communication professionals.

The Award

The 2026 winner will receive a grant to attend the NAMES 2026 Biennial Conference. This includes:

  • Funding: Up to USD 1,000 to cover participation fees, roundtrip airfare, and accommodation.
  • Recognition: An official certificate and souvenir.
  • Professional Growth: A unique opportunity to network and learn at the region's premier science center gathering.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2026 edition, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Position: Be a non-managerial staff member at a science center, museum, or science communication entity within the NAMES region.
  • Experience: Have at least one year of documented experience in the field.
  • Age: Be younger than 35 years old.
  • Status: Must not have won this award in previous years.

How to Apply

Science centers and museums within the NAMES region are invited to nominate one eligible employee. The application process requires:

  1. Online Form: Complete the official Application Form.
  2. Documentation: Attach a current CV.
  3. Nomination Letter: Include a letter (300–500 words) signed by the institution’s CEO, Board Chairperson, or equivalent.

Selection Note: The Reviewing Panel will select a winner based on the applicant's long-term vision for their career in the science center field and how they will benefit from this experience.

Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: 20 January 2026.
  • Winner Announcement: Within one month of the application deadline.
