To celebrate the 2020 World Science Day for Peace and Development, UNESCO will organize an online roundtable on the theme of “Science for and with Society in dealing with COVID-19” on Friday, 6 November, 13:00-14:45 (Paris Time).

The World Science Day for Peace and Development, is proclaimed by UNESCO in 2001 and celebrated each year on 10 November to raise awareness of the important role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies and to highlight the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues.

The main purpose of the 2020 World Science Day Roundtable dialogue is to share good practices and new ideas with UNESCO for improving the interlinkages between science and society to resolve global challenges such as the current pandemic.

Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, will chair the roundtable dialogue. It will be officially opened by a message from Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.

Prof. Edith Heard, 2020 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Laureate for Europe, and Director-General European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) will deliver a keynote speech.

It will be followed by a panel including:

• Prof. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, Chairman of Atri Advisory and Former Science Adviser to the Prime Minister of Malaysia;
• Prof. Amon Murwira, Ph.D. Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Zimbabwe; and
• Ms Melina Sakiyama, Co-founder, Global Youth Biodiversity Network.

The event will be held on the Zoom platform in English and French.
