A broad definition of outreach is “any scientific communication that engages an audience outside of academia”. Outreach thus involves a wide range of activities aimed at public communication of science and technology (PCST). Formally dedicated spaces for PCST, such as science centers and museums, play an essential role in bridging the existing gap between science and society. Yet, there are other projects that go beyond the boundaries of formally dedicated spaces for PCST, and run where audiences normally are; such as public spaces, schools, and universities. Examples from both will be discussed through four talks about outreach and science education, followed by an open discussion to highlight lessons learned and best practices from the presented projects, share thoughts and experiences around the different approaches, discuss how to engage the public with science through outreach, and suggest further activities and initiatives in informal science education.
